Proceedings of the International Conference Differential Equations and Applications in Mathematical Biology, July 18 - 23, 2004.

Foreword

The conference was organized by the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Malaspina University College. It was held in the framework of PIMS Period of Concentration in Mathematical Ecology and Evolution (2003-2005). The conference brought together a wide international forum of experts in mathematical biology and ecology, delay, integral, differential and difference equations, population dynamics, control and optimization, and numerical methods for dynamical systems. The geography of the conference involved participants from Europe (Netherlands, UK, France, Norway, Greece, Hungary, Italy), Asia (Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey), Africa (Mozambique), North America (US, Canada) and New Zealand (overall, 14 countries); in Canada - from the East Coast (Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS) to the West Coast (Vancouver Island, Nanaimo, Malaspina University College), including Alberta (U of A and U of C), Manitoba and Quebec.

There were a lot of possibilities for informal communication after lectures or waiting for the shuttle from Malaspina University College to the hotel which was also time for discussions. Most of us arrived to Nanaimo by ferry and lived near Nanaimo harbour where we enjoyed nature during the daytime and at a sunset and also wildlife quite close.

The conference had an extensive social program which involved a guided tour to the Pacific Biological Station, Department of Fisheries and Oceans. On Wednesday July 21 there was a trip which began with a hike: we walked, and walked, and walked in Paradise Meadows. Then we came to the bottom of Mount Washington where first there was a fog which then cleared up and we could observe the chairlift cable from the bottom and from the top of the mountain. We observed Vancouver Island from the top of Mount Washington; see view 1, view 2, view 3, from the top birds on Mount Washington and view 4, view 5 on the way down the mountain. Further, we continued our trip in the Cathedral Grove After a short guidance in the beginning of the tour we entered the darkness of the grove and continued our way among the trees of the grove. Here you can see local organizer Lev Idels is holding the tree and all our graduate students could not embrace the largest tree. The banquet with dances , piano music and some mathematical discussions completed the conference.

The framework of the conference proceedings allows some historical insight and model discussions which are rarely incorporated into papers on mathematical biology and differential equations. For example, below two of reference letters are quoted.
"The paper contains a survey of recent results in oscillation theory ... which cannot be found in any book on functional differential equations" (about the paper by I.P. Stavroulakis).
"I would suggest that a paper like that of Shnute which addresses broad issues should be put in a prominent position".
In conclusion I would like to use this opportunity to thank the organizing committee (Leonid Berezansky, Elena Litsyn, Arcady Ponosov, Michael Li) and especially local organizer Lev Idels. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the financial support of Malaspina University College, Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Alberta Ingenuity Fund.
