\begin{abstract}
 In this article, we study the existence of positive solutions for
 the  coupled elliptic system
 \begin{gather*}
 -\Delta u= \lambda  (f(u, v)+ h_{1}(x) ) \quad \text{in }\Omega, \\
 -\Delta v= \lambda  (g(u, v)+ h_{2}(x))\quad \text{in }\Omega, \\
 u =v=0 \quad \text{on }\partial \Omega,
 \end{gather*}
 under certain conditions on $f,g$ and allowing $h_1, h_2$ to be singular.
 We also consider the  system
 \begin{gather*}
 -\Delta u= \lambda  ( a(x) u + b(x)v+ f_{1}(v)+ f_{2}(u) ) \quad \text{in }\Omega, \\
 -\Delta v= \lambda  ( b(x)u+ c(x)v+  g_{1}(u)+ g_{2}(v) )\quad \text{in }\Omega, \\
  u =v=0 \quad \text{on }\partial \Omega,
 \end{gather*}
 and prove a Rabinowitz global bifurcation type theorem to this system.

\section{Introduction}

The investigation on the existence questions of positive solutions to 
semilinear elliptic equations and systems has been of great interest 
to many researchers. Many problems in mathematical physics, for example,
wave phenomena \cite{was}, nonlinear field equations
\cite{berestycki1}, combustion theory \cite{bebernes,fink1}, fluid dynamics
\cite{aron} etc. lead to nonlinear eigenvalue problem of the type
$$
-\Delta u= \lambda  f(u), 
$$
where a positive solution is meaningful, see for example 
\cite{berestycki1,berestycki}.
In the recent years, a good amount of research is established for 
reaction--diffusion systems. Reaction--diffusion systems
model many phenomena in biology, ecology, combustion theory, 
chemical reactions, population dynamics etc. A typical example of
these models is

-\Delta v=  g(u)\quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
 u =v=0 \quad \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gathered}

where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$  with a smooth
boundary $\partial \Omega$.

Using Schauder's fixed point theorem and degree theoretic arguments,
 Dalmasso \cite{dalmasso} obtain the existence and uniqueness of
 positive solution to \eqref{begi}. 
de Figueiredo et al \cite{fig} obtain the existence of positive 
solution to \eqref{begi} by an Orlicz space setting for
$N\geq 3$. Hulshof and Van der Vorst \cite{hul} establish the existence 
of positive solution to \eqref{begi}.
For the existence and non--existence of
positive solutions to \eqref{begi} in a ball, we refer the reader 
to \cite{garcia} for $N\geq 4$.
By the method of sub and supersolutions and Schauder's fixed point theorem,
Hai and Shivaji \cite{hai2} establish
the existence of a positive solution to the system
\begin{equation} \label{begi1}
\begin{gathered}
-\Delta u= \lambda f(v)\quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
-\Delta v= \lambda g(u)\quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
 u =v=0\quad \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gathered}
\end{equation}
for $ \lambda$ large.  Using the monotonicity of $f$ and $g$ and degree
theory and $L^{\infty}$ priori estimates,
Cl\'{e}ment et al \cite{cle} obtain the existence of at least one
positive solution to \eqref{begi1}
in  bounded, convex domains. The existence of a nonnegative solutions
to \eqref{begi1} with indefinite weights can be seen in
\cite{tyagi1,tyagi2}. Hai and Shivaji \cite{hai2} point out that,
using the similar arguments as in \cite{hai2}, the existence of a
positive solution can be obtained to the following coupled system
\begin{equation} \label{begi2}

-\Delta u= \lambda  f(u, v)\quad \text{in }\Omega.\\
-\Delta v= \lambda  g(u, v)\quad \text{in }\Omega.\\
  u=v=0 \quad  \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gathered}
\end{equation}
for $\lambda$ sufficiently large. So it is natural to ask that under
 what conditions on the nonlinearities,
we have the existence of positive solutions to \eqref{begi2} for
$\lambda$ sufficiently small.
Recently, Chern et al \cite{cher} establish the existence of
positive solutions to \eqref{begi2} by the method of monotone iteration.
In this paper, we show the existence of positive solutions to
the  nonhomogeneous elliptic system
\begin{equation} \label{sy}
\begin{gathered}
-\Delta u= \lambda  (f(u, v)+ h_{1}(x) ) \quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
-\Delta v= \lambda  (g(u, v)+ h_{2}(x))\quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
  u=v=0 \quad  \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gathered}
\end{equation}
where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary
$\partial \Omega, \lambda$ is a positive parameter and
$h_1, h_2\in L^{\infty}(\Omega)$. We allow the sign changing nature
 of $h_1$ and $h_2$.

We will also consider the following coupled system for the existence 
of a positive solution

  u=v=0 \quad  \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gathered}
\end{equation}
where the conditions on $a, b, c, f_1, f_2, g_1, g_2, h_1, h_2$
will be specified later.
By an application of implicit function theorem in a functional framework,
Anoop and the present author \cite{tvajt}
obtain the existence of a positive solution of scalar equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$.
Chern et al \cite{cher} also obtain the existence and uniqueness
of a solution to \eqref{sy1}, where $a=b=c=h_1=h_2=0$,
by implicit function theorem.
Mitidieri and Sweers \cite{mit}  study the $n\times n$ weakly coupled
system of type \eqref{sy1},
where $f_i, g_i, h_i=0$, for $i=1, 2$. They show the preservance of
the positive cone under the weakly coupled system.
We also use the similar arguments as in \cite{tvajt,cher} to obtain
the existence of a unique positive solution to \eqref{sy1}.

We make the following hypotheses on the nonlinearity and weights:
\begin{itemize}
\item[(H1)] Suppose $ f, g: \mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$  
 are continuous and there exist $L>0$ and $ k>0 $ such that
$f(x,y)\geq L$,   $g(x,y)  \geq  L$,  for all $ x \geq k $ and for all 
 $ y \geq k$.

\item[(H2)] The boundary value problems
\begin{gather*}
 -\Delta z= h_{1} \quad \text{in }\Omega,\\
z=0\quad \text{on }\partial \Omega,
\end{gather*}
and
\begin{gather*}
  -\Delta z=  h_{2} \quad \text{in }\Omega,\\

have positive solutions $z_{h_1}$ and $z_{h_2}$, respectively.

\item[(H3)] Let  $f_1, f_2, g_1, g_2  \in C^{1}(\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})$ be
such that $f_{1}(0)+ f_{2}(0)>0, \,g_{1}(0)+ g_{2}(0)>0$.

\item[(H4)] Let  $a, b, c \in C(\overline{\Omega}, \mathbb{R})$.

\item[(H5)] Let  $|f_1 (s)+ f_2(s')| \leq |f_1 (s+ s')+ f_2(s+s')|$, 
$|g_1 (s)+ g_2(s')| \leq |g_{1} (s+ s')+ g_{2} (s+s')| $
for  $s$ and $s'$ near $0$, and
$|f_1 (S)+ f_2(S')| \leq |f_1 (S+ S')+ f_{2}(S+S')|$, 
$|g_1 (S)+ g_2(S')| \leq |g_{1} (S+ S')+ g_{2} (S+S')| $
for  $S$ and $S'$ near $\infty$.

\item[(H6)] $\lim_{s\to 0} \frac{f_{1}(s)}{s}
= \lim_{s\to 0} \frac{f_{2}(s)}{s}= \lim_{s\to 0} \frac{g_{1}(s)}{s}=
\lim_{s\to 0} \frac{g_{2}(s)}{s}=0$.

\item[(H7)] There is a $1<q<2^{*}$, such that
$\lim_{|s|\to \infty} \frac{f_{1}(s)}{|s|^{q-1} }
= \lim_{|s|\to \infty} \frac{f_{2}(s)}{|s|^{q-1}}
=\lim_{|s|\to \infty} \frac{g_{1}(s)}{|s|^{q-1} }
=\lim_{|s|\to \infty} \frac{g_{2}(s)}{|s|^{q-1} }=0$.

We organize this paper as follows: Section 2 deals with the proof of 
Theorems \ref{t1}, \ref{t2}. While
Section 3 shows the bifurcation results.
We state now the main results.

\begin{theorem}\label{t1}
 Let {\rm (H1)} and {\rm (H2)} hold. Then there exists a positive
solution $(u, v)$  to \eqref{sy} for $\lambda$ sufficiently small.
\end{theorem}

\begin{theorem}\label{t2}
Let $a, b, c\in L^{\infty}(\Omega)$. Let {\rm (H2)} and {\rm (H3)} hold.
Then there exists a unique positive solution $(u, v)$  to \eqref{sy1} 
for $\lambda$ sufficiently small.

\section{Proof of main results}

\begin{proof}[Proof of Theorem \ref{t1}]
Let $f(x)=f(0)$ and $g(x)= g(0)$ for $x<0$. Let $\xi_0$ be the solution of

Now using strong maximum principle and boundary point lemma
\cite[p.34]{gil}, we have $\xi_{0}(x)\geq c d(x, \partial \Omega)$
for some $c>0$. Let $X= C(\overline{\Omega})$ and $A:X\times X\to X\times X$

 Dirichlet boundary condition. It is easy to see that $A$ is
a completely continuous operator and fixed points of $A$ are solutions
to the problem \eqref{sy}. Let $\psi= (\xi_{\lambda}, \xi_{\lambda})$, where
$\xi_{\lambda}= \frac{\lambda L \xi_0}{2}$
and let there exist $w_0>0, w_1>0$ and let $\phi= (w_0, w_1)$.
We note that $\psi\leq \phi$ for $\lambda>0$ sufficiently small.
Let $\mathcal{K}$ be a cone in $X\times X$ defined as:

Now we claim that $\mathcal{K}$ is invariant under $A$.

To prove the claim, we will verify the following:

\item[(i)] If $(u, v) \geq \psi$, then $A(u, v) \geq \psi$.
\item[(ii)] If $(u, v) \leq \phi$, then $A(u, v) \leq \phi$.

We extend $f_i$ and $g_i$ to be defined on $\mathbb{R}$ for $u, v<0$ 
in the following manner.
Let $f_i(x)=f(0)$ and $g_i(x)= g(0)$ for $x<0$, $i=1, 2$. Let
$F: \mathbb{R}\times [H_{0}^{1}(\Omega)]^2 \to H^{-1}(\Omega)]^2$

To obtain the solution of \eqref{sy1} in a small neighborhood of $\lambda=0$,
we apply implicit function theorem at $(\lambda, u, v)= (0,0,0)$.
The Fr\'{e}chet derivative of $F$ is given by

which is an isomorphism from $[H_{0}^{1}(\Omega)]^2$ to
$[H^{-1}(\Omega)]^2$. Also, one can see that $F$ is a $C^1$ map. 
By an application of implicit function theorem, see
\cite[Theorem 4B, pp. 150]{zeid},

 Now we differentiate \eqref{f} with respect to $\lambda$
and evaluate at $(0,0,0)$, which yields that $(u'(0), v'(0) )$ is the unique

an application of {\rm (H2)} implies that $u'(0)>0, v'(0)>0  $ in $\Omega$
and using the fact that $u(0)=v(0)=0$, we get $u(\lambda) >0, v(\lambda)>0 $
for $\lambda\in (0, \delta)$, $\delta\leq \lambda_0$. Since
 $h_1, h_2\in L^{\infty}(\Omega)$, by the classical regularity theory,
$u'(0), v'(0) \in C^{1}(\Omega)$ and one can see that
$ u(\lambda)(x), v(\lambda)(x)>0, \,\forall\, x\in \Omega$, which completes
the proof.

\section{Bifurcation}

Let us consider the coupled system

Let  $f_1, f_2, g_1, g_2  \in C^{1}(\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})$ such that
$f_{1}(0)=0= f_{2}(0)=g_{1}(0)= g_{2}(0)$.
Then we observe that $\overline{F}(\lambda, u, v)=0$, for all
$\lambda\in \mathbb{R}$; i.e., $(\lambda, 0, 0)$ is a solution of \eqref{sy3}
for every $\lambda\in \mathbb{R}$.
These kind of pairs are called trivial solutions. The set

is called a set of nontrivial solutions of \eqref{sy3}.
 We say that $(\overline{\lambda}, 0, 0)$ is a bifurcation point of
\eqref{sy3} if in any neighborhood of $(\overline{\lambda}, 0, 0)$ in

We recall some qualitative results from \cite{chang1,chang2,fig2,furta}.

\eqref{sy3} and is adapted from \cite{del} to the coupled system.
